October 30, 2017, Astana. The Prosecutor General’s Office hosted a meeting of the Prosecutor General Zhakyp Assanov with Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna, and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Yury Fedotov.
During the meeting, the Prosecutor General thanked the UN Office for supporting initiatives of Kazakhstan on the global arena, and stressed the role of the Office in the fight against international terrorism.
“Terrorists are finding new recruits by using modern methods and means of recruitment. “Sleeper cells” are emerging. They have committed acts of terrorism in Europe and other countries. Kazakhstan has also come up against it. Such global challenge requires joint efforts of all states,” said Zhakyp Assanov.
According to the opinion of the sides, the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (Vienna, April 2017) gave a new impetus to the development of partnership relations between the Academy of Law Enforcement Agencies under the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Nations Office. An example is the Regional Hub created with the direct support of the Office, which has gained momentum and became recognizable in the Central Asian region.
The sides also discussed the possibility of organizing trainings and sharing experience in the issues related to countering terrorism.
Mr. Fedotov thanked the Kazakh side for the warm hospitality and expressed interest in further expansion of bilateral relations in the legal sphere.
“I hope that the scheduled events will make a significant contribution to the development of meaningful interaction in ensuring security on the basis of mutual trust and mutual understanding of common goals and objectives in the struggle against crime,” added Zh.Assanov and finalized the meeting.
