On the initiative of the White House the Summit on countering violent extremism was held at the Department of State, where more than 60 delegations of the world, including representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations and civil society, experts, religious and youth leaders took part. The Kazakhstani delegation was headed by the Prosecutor General Mr. Askhat Daulbayev.
The US Secretary of State Mr. John Kerry and the UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon gave a speech at the opening ceremony of the Summit. After the first session of the forum the US President Mr. Barack Obama made a speech.
The main objective of the forum is to develop an action agenda to address violent extremism, which is expected to be adopted at the leaders-level summit of UNGA.
The main topics of the agenda were the issues related to the development of effective policies on prevention of the growth of violent extremism, suppression of its driving forces and the creation of safe communities.
Making a speech at the forum, Mr. A.Daulbayev supported the idea of consolidation of efforts of all countries of the world to prevent and counter violent extremism in all its forms, and told about the taken measures in our country on strengthening the prevention of extremism and terrorism.
As there was stressed by the Prosecutor General, high level of threat of extremism and terrorism for international security requires new methods of combating and deeper integration of the world community. According to Mr. A.Daulbayev, joint efforts should be primarily aimed at prevention and suppression of the distribution of radical ideology, exchanging experience on effective methods of prevention of extremism and terrorism, prevention of the departure of citizens abroad to participate in hostilities, timely investigation and detention of radical elements that are trying to hide on the territory of another countries, identification and suppression of financing terrorism.
Concluding his speech, the Prosecutor General proposed to hold the next regional Summit on countering violent extremism in Astana this year.
As a result of the forum there was adopted the Joint communique, where the participants emphasized their commitment to fight against violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations, as well as the need to intensify the efforts of the international community to counter the radicalization of society.
In this regard, there was noted the importance of strengthening the role of civil society actors, including youth, women, religious leaders, cultural and educational organizations in combating extremism. Significant attention is paid to the problems in social, economic and political spheres, especially concerning minorities, vulnerable to violent extremism.
All participants of the meeting agreed that the Washington Summit will be the beginning for series of regional meetings and other events all around the world, aimed at creating a comprehensive program of action against the spread and propaganda of extremism, elimination of appropriate measures on its prevention.
