About the meeting on the issues of legal cooperation (March 18, 2015)

Today the First Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Iogan Merkel has held a meeting with the Director General of Humans Rights and Rule of Law, Council of Europe Mr. Philippe Boillat.

Mr. Iogan Merkel has informed about the main activities of the Prosecutor General’s Office and has noted that the development of international relationship and integration into the international legal community is one of the main directions of activities of the Kazakhstani prosecution offices.

The parties have welcomed the start of the Joint program on support of the Kazakhstani authorities in improving the quality and efficiency of the justice system of Kazakhstan and expressed their hope on its implementation.

It has been noted that one of the main goals of the Action plan of the Council of Europe “Priorities of cooperation in framework of the neighborhood policy with Kazakhstan in 2014-2015 years” is to create conditions for possible accession of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the European Convention in the field of criminal proceeding.

Moreover, at the meeting there have been discussed the issues on implementation of new criminal legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, taken measures on reduction of prison population, and also the possibility of accession by Kazakhstan the observer status at the Consultative Council of European Prosecutors.
